I originally posted this under Choir, but I think it belongs in General Discussion:
I love our choir. I wouldn't change a thing about them. I love the Coffee House, I wouldn't change a thing about it. I don't quite see where else to post about musical concerns though, so here I am.
I think we need more variety in the music for our services. Right now the biggest surprise is usually the selection played during the offering. I come from a church background where the music was a little more...enthusiastic and lively. If a Pentecostal church has 15 members, there will be a three-piece band and a soloist. We have nearly two hundred members. There's a lot of untapped talent there, and room for more variety in our music selection. When we sang 'Blowin' in the Wind' last week, I thought THIS is what I expected in the way of a hymn from a UU church when I first arrived, before I found that musically, the sixties are still far off in the future most of the time for this congregation. If this is a direction toward spicing up the hymns and music, I applaud it. I can't speak for young people and people with different cultural backgrounds (except my own), but my feeling is a greater and livelier variety of music is attractive to a broader audience. I'm not saying throw out the old stuff, and I'm SURE not saying add Christian Rock, but the formula of two or three hymns all written before I was born, and an occasional choir performance of songs written before my father was born, can be shaken up.
How about one old familiar, one new (written in the last fifty years), and more performances between choir performances? I have no musical skills myself, but plenty of other people do. Let's hear them! I didn't know until recently that we had a flautist. I do know Eve plays piano and violin, Paul Kinosian's children are practically their own string section, and one of the forum regulars is a pianist who studied at Juliard. I know people are shy, but I'm sure we have people who can strum a guitar and sing a song. Maybe there is someone who was a soloist in their old church. Surely we can do a better job of encouraging them to come forward? |

| Jonathon mentioned at our lunch after services Sunday that there is a sort of softback addendum to our hymnal with more recent hymns. I would happily pay for one so we can see if we would like to order more of them. Can anyone tell me where to send my money to get one? |

Check with Judy Turnipseed and the Worship Committee. I remotely remember this being discussed in committee before they got involved so much in the Shared Sanctuary topics. |
